Ayurveda: The Complete Healing System of Body, Mind & Spirit

Ayurveda: The Complete Healing System of Body, Mind & Spirit

Ayurveda: Complete Healing System for your Mind, Body & Spirit with Tresa Laferty

Yoga and Ayurveda go hand-in-hand and are often called sister practices. The word Ayurveda literally means the "knowledge or science of life" – learning “how” to life. Ayurveda being the science and yoga is the practice of the science. Ayurveda helps us discover who we really are and what choices are best for us. It is a personalized system of healing that touches our mind, body and spirit. So, where did you learn your current eating, sleeping and lifestyle habits? If you were lucky, you learned some of this from your parents. If you are like most people, you learned these things when you went to college or moved out on your own. Yikes! Wouldn’t you love to have a system of healing that showed you how to eat, what foods are best for you, what lifestyle habits help you live a healthy, happy and long life? Ayurveda has ancient knowledge to help our us live in balance in our modern lives.

Ayurveda: Ancient Healing System Addressing Your Mind, Body & Spirit

Part I: Discovering Your True Nature. (Saturday, June 23rd, 1-3pm) The system of Ayurveda not only helps us understand our natural tendencies but teaches us to embrace them. Did you ever go on a “diet” that worked wonders for your friend and when you tried it, not only did you feel awful, but you actually gained weight? It wasn’t the right thing for your body. This class will help you see yourself through the eyes of the 5,000 year old system of healing called Ayurveda where we talk about “doshas.” You will discover your “dosha type” and learn simple ways to bring your body back in to balance.

Part II: Dinacharya: Daily Routine. (Saturday, July 14th, 1-3 pm) Finding balance on a daily basis is a foundational teaching of Ayurveda. We will discuss some of the most common daily practices that Ayurveda uses including: abhyanga (warm oil self-massage), herbal supplements (what makes Ayurvedic herbs different), lifestyle (learn ways to reduce anxiety and increase happiness), aromatherapy, color therapy, crystals and more! You will be given simple ways to pacify or support your personal issues.

Part III: Food as Medicine. (Saturday, August 25th, 1-3 pm) One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your health is to use your food as healing medicine for your body. In Ayurveda, we are taught that consuming certain foods can actually alleviate health issues. Would it be great if your “prescription” for an ailment were to eat a yummy dish? Ayurveda teaches us what foods we should consume for specific conditions and body types. Learn what is best for YOU, what to avoid and some simple ways to improve your diet. We will be sampling some food too!

Each class is $20 but if full amount is pre-paid, you get all three for $50. There will be a  FREE 2-hour Ayurvedic Open House after each event. This is an opportunity to ask questions of our Ayurvedic Practitioner, explore Ayurvedic products and find out about our upcoming Ayurvedic Health Counselor program.

Smudging: Make your own feathered smudge sticks

What are Smudge Fans, and what are they used for?
Smudging is probably best known as a Native American ritual, although smudging has been used since ancient times by many people as a ceremony of purification, among the Catholics and Eastern Orthodox churches, among Hindus and Buddhists as well as the Native American tribes.
Smudging is a ritual to cleanse or clear a person, a place or an object of negative energies, spirits or influences. It is a ritual of cleansing and purification for the physical and spiritual bodies to remove negative energy. Smudging is not strictly for use in cleansing and purifying, it can be used to draw in positive energies and as a means of creating smoke to carry our prayers up to the Great Spirit.
The smudging ceremony involves the burning of special sacred plants and herbal resins, or incense, then either passing an object through the resulting smoke, or fanning the smoke around a person or place. The spirit of the plant purifies whatever is being smudged. Remember that when you smudge you are asking the spirit of the sacred plants for assistance. We are entering into a relationship with the powers of these plants and with the spirits of sacred ceremony. We come from a place of heart and clear intention.

At this workshop you will learn more about the ancient art of smudging and together we will make beautiful feathered smudge sticks for you to take home. All supplies are included in this 3-hour event.

Yoga Philosophy: Sankhya Theory w/Daren Friesen of Moksha Yoga

Don't miss this opportunity to train with Daren Friesen, owner of the esteemed Moksha Yoga of Chicago, for a discussion of the yogic philosophy of Sankhya theory. The evening with start with a short yoga practice followed by a learning and discussion of this deep topic. Any avid yoga practitioner or yoga teacher is welcome to join us!

Bio: Daren Friesen is the founder and director of Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago, the largest yoga studio in the Midwest with 40 teachers and 5000 students. Daren has been an avid student of yoga since starting his practice in 1989 shortly after finishing college in Los Angeles, where he majored in International Relations at the University of Southern California, participating in student government and serving as an officer in his fraternity. After moving to Chicago in 1995 due to a job transfer and not finding much of the vinyasa flow that he loved in L.A., he left his corporate life (i.e. coat, tie, wingtips, and all) shortly thereafer to study yoga, practice, and travel. Wanting to reach deeper into the roots of vinyasa (i.e. tristhana), Daren traveled to India for 9 months on 2 trips in 1998-1999 studying at the Astanga Yoga Research Institute (Laksmipuram) with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Today, after taking many more trips and spending over 30 months in the country studying yoga, ayurveda, sanskrit, and sutras, Daren has a deep understanding of the culture in which yoga originated.

One of the most influential teachers in his pursuit of the knowledge of yoga (jnana yoga) is Acharya Dr. Shankara Narayana Jois of Mysore, South India. Practicing Sri Vidwan K. Pattabhi's Astanga Yoga and then sitting in the presence of Acharya on the same day to receive the teachings of Patanjali's 8-fold Path was a truly a transformational experience. Having explored yoga's roots and depths, he returned to Chicago to open Moksha Yoga Center in 1999 with the intention of offering yoga to a Western audience but in its traditional and authentic form with its roots deeply nourished by the Vedas, to a Western audience.

Have some fun with applied kinesiology testing for strength and balance using his hand crafted sacred realignment instruments. Michael will be raffleing off a free healing pendant!

Healing sessions with Michael will be available for those interested Sunday afternoon or on Monday.

Shaman Michael Smith is a modern day shaman who has made it part of his life service to teach and provide people with healing and transformational experiences that are often described as impossible to achieve... simply because it cannot be labeled or categorized by our modern day index of healing techniques.

Shaman Smith is a trade term unlike Goldsmith, Silversmith, Blacksmith, etc. Michael teaches that we are all in unique ways Shaman Smith’s here to expand consciousness, share our sacred abilities, and discover divine truths to serve ourselves and others through personal empowerment and spiritual development.

For thousands of years, Shamans have been trusted and relied upon to help the community at large to resolve physical, emotional and spiritual issues by performing sacred healing touch and nonphysical practices that are produced from a “shamanic state of consciousness”.

Humbled by the results of miraculous restorations and recoveries through the Divine at work, Michael gives many thanks to the intuitive mastery of this ancient art of angelic healing that was gifted to him as a young boy.

Develop Your Personal Mantra - Sankalpa (2-part series)

Develop Your Personal Mantra –

Sankalpa

If you want to connect deeper with your true self, come explore your interior. Develop your own personal Mantra. This is a statement of your highest aspersion. It is a statement that resonates from within you. As in “Om Mani Padme Hom” mantra - which evokes compassion toward yourself and all sentient beings, we will connect head and heart. Those who have walked this path before you say they have felt a shift in the way they walk through their life.

This will be a 2 part workshop, one and half hours each.  The first week will be an explanation of the practice, a personal reflection on what inspires you and some “first hand” experience in the practice. After a week, to do some self-study, you will return for the second week to redefine and cultivate the practice.

Facilitator: Kitty Downey
Dates: This is a 2-part series taking place on Saturday, Oct 1st & 15th.

Cost: $50 for both days (Oct 1st & 15th)

Intuitive Tarot Workshop

Learn to read tarot intuitively! With almost 30 years of experience as a tarot reader, Deborah Lighthart has learned countless ways to use the cards to divine information for just about any question you could ever have. Her focus is on how you can use the cards to better navigate through your life's lessons and make the most of your situation.

By learning to interpret tarot intuitively, you can bypass the need to read countless study guides and memorize multiple different card meanings. You can enhance your own intuitive/psychic ability by using the imagery inherent in every deck to create a new card meanings that will be personal to each and every reader.

Throughout the afternoon, we will cover the basics of reading preparation, mastering the intuitive technique, creating layouts and using crystals or pendulums to change the future. You will have ample opportunity to practice all that you are learning with other participants.

Card readers of all skill levels and experience are invited to attend, bringing whatever decks you normally use. No matter how much (or how little) experience you have, we can all join in this journey from the head to the heart, where we really do know it all.
