Smudging: Make your own feathered smudge sticks

What are Smudge Fans, and what are they used for?
Smudging is probably best known as a Native American ritual, although smudging has been used since ancient times by many people as a ceremony of purification, among the Catholics and Eastern Orthodox churches, among Hindus and Buddhists as well as the Native American tribes.
Smudging is a ritual to cleanse or clear a person, a place or an object of negative energies, spirits or influences. It is a ritual of cleansing and purification for the physical and spiritual bodies to remove negative energy. Smudging is not strictly for use in cleansing and purifying, it can be used to draw in positive energies and as a means of creating smoke to carry our prayers up to the Great Spirit.
The smudging ceremony involves the burning of special sacred plants and herbal resins, or incense, then either passing an object through the resulting smoke, or fanning the smoke around a person or place. The spirit of the plant purifies whatever is being smudged. Remember that when you smudge you are asking the spirit of the sacred plants for assistance. We are entering into a relationship with the powers of these plants and with the spirits of sacred ceremony. We come from a place of heart and clear intention.

At this workshop you will learn more about the ancient art of smudging and together we will make beautiful feathered smudge sticks for you to take home. All supplies are included in this 3-hour event.

Yoga Philosophy: Sankhya Theory w/Daren Friesen of Moksha Yoga

Don't miss this opportunity to train with Daren Friesen, owner of the esteemed Moksha Yoga of Chicago, for a discussion of the yogic philosophy of Sankhya theory. The evening with start with a short yoga practice followed by a learning and discussion of this deep topic. Any avid yoga practitioner or yoga teacher is welcome to join us!

Bio: Daren Friesen is the founder and director of Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago, the largest yoga studio in the Midwest with 40 teachers and 5000 students. Daren has been an avid student of yoga since starting his practice in 1989 shortly after finishing college in Los Angeles, where he majored in International Relations at the University of Southern California, participating in student government and serving as an officer in his fraternity. After moving to Chicago in 1995 due to a job transfer and not finding much of the vinyasa flow that he loved in L.A., he left his corporate life (i.e. coat, tie, wingtips, and all) shortly thereafer to study yoga, practice, and travel. Wanting to reach deeper into the roots of vinyasa (i.e. tristhana), Daren traveled to India for 9 months on 2 trips in 1998-1999 studying at the Astanga Yoga Research Institute (Laksmipuram) with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Today, after taking many more trips and spending over 30 months in the country studying yoga, ayurveda, sanskrit, and sutras, Daren has a deep understanding of the culture in which yoga originated.

One of the most influential teachers in his pursuit of the knowledge of yoga (jnana yoga) is Acharya Dr. Shankara Narayana Jois of Mysore, South India. Practicing Sri Vidwan K. Pattabhi's Astanga Yoga and then sitting in the presence of Acharya on the same day to receive the teachings of Patanjali's 8-fold Path was a truly a transformational experience. Having explored yoga's roots and depths, he returned to Chicago to open Moksha Yoga Center in 1999 with the intention of offering yoga to a Western audience but in its traditional and authentic form with its roots deeply nourished by the Vedas, to a Western audience.

Shaman Michael Smith is a modern day shaman who has made it part of his life service to teach and provide people with healing and transformational experiences that are often described as impossible to achieve... simply because it cannot be labeled or categorized by our modern day index of healing techniques.

Shaman Smith is a trade term unlike Goldsmith, Silversmith, Blacksmith, etc. Michael teaches that we are all in unique ways Shaman Smith’s here to expand consciousness, share our sacred abilities, and discover divine truths to serve ourselves and others through personal empowerment and spiritual development.

For thousands of years, Shamans have been trusted and relied upon to help the community at large to resolve physical, emotional and spiritual issues by performing sacred healing touch and nonphysical practices that are produced from a “shamanic state of consciousness”.

Humbled by the results of miraculous restorations and recoveries through the Divine at work, Michael gives many thanks to the intuitive mastery of this ancient art of angelic healing that was gifted to him as a young boy.

This will be a 2 part workshop, one and half hours each.  The first week will be an explanation of the practice, a personal reflection on what inspires you and some “first hand” experience in the practice. After a week, to do some self-study, you will return for the second week to redefine and cultivate the practice.

Facilitator: Kitty Downey
Dates: This is a 2-part series taking place on Saturday, Oct 1st & 15th.

Beginner's Mind Meditation Level 1.2

Beginner Mind Follow-Up – Level 1.2

Science has proven that a consistent meditation practice can lower your heart rate, calm the nervous system, improve the endocrine system sending endorphins out into the blood stream, increase blood flow, oxygenate the brain and even create new brain cells. The key is consistent practice. Some of the essentials covered in Level 1.1 were, getting comfortable, breathing, and some tools of meditation. In the last workshop we touched on some basics. Here we will revisit and add to these tools.

When we begin a practice it is important to develop a routine or ritual in order to be successful. It is common for questions and concerns to bubble-up, as we turn inward. Am I doing this right? Am I breathing correctly? My practice is not like what other people are telling me. How long do I do this?

There is something that keeps coming up when I practice, what can I do? There are many techniques available that can take us deeper. What works for ones may not resonate with the next person. In this workshop will discuss your questions and develop some new tools to assist us. The purpose of these workshops is to build your practice support your journey.

Wear something comfortable, bring water and a journal or note pad.

You are invited to join me on the cushion or chair to journey inward to your peaceful place.

Facilitated by Kitty Downey.

Meditation Level 1 - Beginner's Mind

Meditation Workshop - Level 1 - Beginning Your Practice

A meditation practice can lower your heart rate, calm the nervous system, improve the endocrine system sending endorphin's out into the blood stream, increase blood flow, oxygenate the brain and create new brain cells…. just to mention a few of the benefits. The practice may only take a few moments in the beginning and at the end you may notice a shift or change.

To begin a meditation practice we need to develop some tools. In this workshop we will begin by finding a place to practice. If the body is not comfortable the mind will be distracted. Connecting with our breath is next, which sends the signal for the body and mind to relax. One of the keys in this process is detachment or, learning to release from the emotional attachment to our thoughts. To do this we will focus on a simple but powerful technique to settle the mind and establish trust.

Please wear something comfortable, bring water to drink and a journal or note book. Join us with an open heart and mind as you take this guided journey to find your peaceful place.

Chakra Essential Oils Workshop

Facilitated by Barb Lemke, RN, CCAP

Are you familiar with the word Chakra?  In yoga classes you have probably heard the teacher talk about them. But, what exactly is a Chakra and what does it mean to have a blocked Chakra?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means wheel, disc or any circular form or arrangement.  There are 7 major chakras within the subtle body that are described as circular vortexes of energy near the spinal cord.  Each chakra corresponds with specific glands and organs, making each one responsible for a variety of bodily functions and emotions!

Each chakra has a different name, location, sound, color representation, and so much more!  And guess what? Here is the best part! There are essential oils we can apply or inhale to keep each one of these chakras open, balanced, and singing a happy song!                                    Who doesn’t want a happy, balanced chakra system?

Cost of the workshop is $5.  Essential Oils will be available to experience.

This workshop is designed to address all levels of need from rank beginners to seasoned practitioners with regards to treating pain in the lower back. These methods along with diet and lifestyle modifications have proven to alleviate the most challenging of back issues (all of which will be addressed in the workshop). Those with back issues will find methods for alleviation and those without will find invaluable preventative techniques. Bring friends, family, and yourselves to address anything from too much sitting at the desk, to chronic pain, all the way to slipped disks.

"It is my sincerest hope that students attending this workshop will take home useful physical and mindful methods to help them effectively handle the pressures of a society that encourages us to ignore our body, mind, and spiritual connections." ~ Alex

Note: This class is $5 additional with class packages, or $20 for drop-ins.

Aerial Tricks, Play & Fitness

Don't miss this opportunity to work with Becky Stella from Aerial Yoga Minneapolis, as she takes us to new heights and depths using aerial hammocks. Two back-to-back classes are offered on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon: Aerial Play & Fitness and Hammock Tricks.

Discover an expressive and playful way to work out on “silk” hammocks. Elevate your heart rate in a playful way and deepen your body connection through dynamic movement, hammock tricks, and conditioning. Develop arm and core strength, coordination, and grace. Learn to safely execute tricks in the hammock, and beautifully transition between them.

Aerial Play and Fitness is a great foundation to the Hammock Tricks class, and highly recommended, however either class can be done as a stand alone class.

Cost for each class is $25 ($20 for Mosaic Members).

If taking both Aerial Play & Fitness and Hammock Tricks, combo pricing will be discounted to $40 ($35 for Mosaic Members) for both classes. (Sorry, class packages and Living Social offers do not apply.) Sign up today. Space is very limited!
